The Free Fishing Weekend

Expectations were high for the free fishing weekend this year but none of us were prepared for the level of interest and the number of visitors that made it a truly magical event.

By close of play on Saturday it became clear how special the weekend was to be with new membership subscriptions almost exceeding last year’s total, by Sunday evening we were absolutely stunned by the results with exactly one hundred new members signed up, a figure that not only beats last year’s event by a quite significant margin but also represents the best results in almost twenty years of promotional activities.

Patrycja Bury of the Angling Trust Building Bridges project joined us with her family on Saturday and her Facebook report that evening gave us a glowing review boosting the society’s reputation to an ever wider audience.

Our coaching team were extremely busy over the weekend, every child caught fish and parents were entertained by Andy’s unconventional methods, Peter and Graham worked tirelessly with the kids and bream machine Adam lived up to his name by landing his usual netfull for the camera.

By far the most lovely part was member Andy Leigh’s Daughters naming every fish they caught, the prettiest name being Anabelle a beautiful name for a six ounce roach.

Our new friends from Impulse Baits had a jolly boys outing and even picked out a few carp here and there, Dean, Steve and the guys wandered the lakes talking to anglers and passing on some of their vast carp fishing knowledge, it’s only a matter of time before we produce the next Fairbrass or Hamidi.

The usual thanks somehow don’t seem adequate this time around but sincere thanks go to our tackle dealers and sponsors.

Middy international and kodex tackle, Trentside tackle, Nathans of Burslem, Rowleys, Dolphin discount tackle and guns, Pettits feeds, The pets place, Bucknall bikes and fishing tackle and AA tackle exchange.

Special thanks to the very special members who gave up their time to make the event possible, your contributions are priceless.

Finally and perhaps most importantly a huge thank you to everyone who attended, your smiles, handshakes and kind words mean more than you can imagine.

Time now to recharge the batteries and prepare for the Midland Game Fair in September and the Uttoxeter fly show in October, then on to the British fly fair international at Staffordshire county showground in February 2018. Who knows where we’ll go next.
